The lake and its surrounding area have been home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Anishinaabe people, who used the lake as a fishing ground and a transportation route. They called the lake "Wahwashkesh," which means "the place of many shoals."
The Anishinaabe people also used the lake as a ceremonial site, and it was considered a sacred place. They believed that the lake was a gift from the Creator and that it was their responsibility to take care of it. The Anishinaabe people were displaced from the area during the colonization period, but their cultural influence can still be seen in the area today.
Many of the original Anishinaabe families are on found on Parry Island just outside the town of Parry Sound. The community of Wasauksing takes in the majority of the island and has incredible views over Georgian Bay.
Lake Wahwashkesh is a natural freshwater lake that covers an area of approximately 1721 hectares with over 120 kms of incredible shoreline. It is the largest lake in the Parry Sound area and is surrounded by a rugged and diverse landscape. The lake is fed by the Magnetawan River as well as several small creeks and streams, and flows back into the Magnetawan River, which eventually empties into Georgian Bay.
Although there have been cottages on it for many years there has been a bit of a building boom since covid with many new builds and renovations.
Sue and I camped and paddled on it last summer and it became one of our favorite lakes. With 30% of the lake being crown land it doesn't feel crowded even in the peak season.
